While our galleries are closed we’ve been reflecting on JCG exhibitions past. #flashbackfriday
One of our highly popular Perth International Arts Festival exhibitions was “U-Ram Choe” in 2012. ⠀

In his first solo exhibition in Australia, celebrated Korean artist U-Ram Choe presented a series of his kinetic, uncanny sculptures, made from a range of high-end engineering materials, that move as you approach them.

Charting a path between art, science and cybernetic technologies, the artist uses custom designed components in steel, aluminium & acrylic to form the “skeleton” for the “brains & muscles” (CPUs & motors). This infrastructure is then assembled into otherworldly flora & fauna that are categorised with a fabricated narrative of species & habitat. The works invite the viewer to consider notions of biological permanence & the inevitability of extinction, shifting the focus from fears of our own vulnerability in times of unprecedented environmental change precipitated by our own actions.⠀
