Respected Noongar artist and child of the stolen generations, Laurel Nannup, reveals her story’s through woodcuts, etchings and photographs.
The works illustrate her memories of family, place and time. Many are of happy times with her extended family while others are emotional reminders of the hardship and sadness she endured when she was placed in the Wandering Mission to be trained for domestic work.
Laurel went on to raise her own family and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Curtin University in 2000. In 2006 she wrote and illustrated her book, A Story to Tell, telling the stories of her childhood through her art.

Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and Curtin University.

Her artist son Brett Nannup, in conversation with 50fifty:2020 curators Chris Malcolm and Lia McKnight, shares insights and observations of his mother’s life, her triumphs, her adversity and most of all, her amazing art practice.
