Dr John Martin examines the bohemian, sexual, craft and muscular masculinities that populated the printing trade.
Bohemian, sexual, craft and muscular masculinities populated the printing trade while Australian women in the printing industry are mostly undocumented. To redress this imbalance, the colour ink supplements illustrated by Harry J Weston and Alexander Sass in the graphic arts journal Wimble’s Reminder will be examined.
Dr John Martin is a graphic designer with extensive professional experience in industry and education. His research practice centres on Australian twentieth-century communication, graphic design and print, practices, techniques, technologies and processes.

The John Curtin Gallery co-presents the central international exhibition with Fremantle Arts Centre for this new festival of contemporary craft IOTA21: Indian Ocean Craft Triennial.
The artists in the inaugural Indian Ocean Craft Triennial: Curiosity and Rituals of the Everyday are guided by principles of craft as a social practice capable of enhancing community innovation, collaboration and economic improvement.
Blending traditional practice with contemporary materials and expressions they explore themes such as ceremony, colonisation, gender politics, ritual, and culture. Works include ceramics, fibre and textiles, weaving and painting.
