Meet the artists behind the successful art collective proppaNOW.

Join John Curtin Gallery’s new Community Engagement Coordinator Ron Bradfield as he chats with several of the members of the proppaNOW Collective.

proppaNOW, was set up in Brisbane in 2003 to give urban-based Aboriginal artists a voice. They present a unique and controversial perspective of black Australia which is sometimes confronting and always thought provoking.

This event is presented as part of our program of community engagement events throughout 2023 delivered by our Carrolup Centre for Truth-telling and supported by Lotterywest.

proppaNOW

Queensland’s leading Indigenous arts collective, proppaNOW, was set up in Brisbane in 2003 to give urban-based Aboriginal artists a voice. They present a unique and controversial perspective of black Australia which is sometimes confronting and always thought provoking.
The name proppaNOW best encapsulates the philosophy of what the collective is all about. They approach everything in a considered manner whilst providing a supportive environment for members to explore current social and cultural issues through art. The collective creates art that raises awareness of Aboriginal urban expression that depicts a contemporary story. They reinforce that Aboriginal Australia is a living culture that has evolved over time.

Ron Bradfield

Ron Bradfield Jnr is a saltwater man from Bard Country, north of Broome but grew up in Geraldton, Western Australia. He now calls Whadjuk Boodjar (Perth) his home. As a self described CYO (Chief Yarning Officer) Ron facilitates cultural conversations across all levels of our communities, helping Australians to revisit and explore their own personal stories – so as to better consider their own connections to this place – their home.

We welcome Ron as our new Community Engagement Officer, and we look forward to many more yarns.
