The John Curtin Gallery is delighted to announce its 2020 major exhibitions program. Commencing during Bunuru in February, we are proud to once again partner with the Perth Festival to present comprehensive bodies of work from two of Western Australia’s leading visual artists, Ian Strange and Sandra Hill.

The John Curtin Gallery has announced the 40 regional artists, including 16 Indigenous artists, who will showcase their work in The Alternative Archive exhibition to be held in 2020.

A Curtin University research collaboration between the Gallery and the Centre for Sport and Recreation Research (CSRR) has been recognised at the 2019 Museums and Galleries National Awards (MAGNA) and the activities supporting the Carrolup tour to Colgate University has won the inaugural Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Reconciliation.

A year ago we launched our Founders’ Club, which has supported a number of Gallery programs including the tour of Carrolup art to Colgate University, visits to Perth by featured artists and an expansion of our exhibition program.

Ancestors Before the Journey of the Dreaming is an outstanding example of Shane Pickett’s work, created at the height of his artistic prowess. It is a deeply compelling and visually striking painting that beautifully articulates the resistance and resilience of Nyoongar people and their culture.

In April selected pieces of the Herbert Mayer Collection of Carrolup Artwork returned to their former home at Colgate University in Upstate New York as part of a special exhibition to mark the 200th anniversary of that university. John Curtin Gallery Director, Chris Malcolm, accompanied senior Curtin staff and Noongar elders to Colgate University to share the story of the artwork, and its significance to Noongar culture.

With the holidays almost upon us and the year drawing to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on what was a milestone year for the Gallery as we proudly celebrated our 20th anniversary. It is fitting that this year saw record attendances to the Gallery, reaching 48,000 visitors.

In October we were delighted to announce the signing of a new three-year partnership agreement between the Gallery and Navitas which was celebrated with a reception at Curtin St Georges Terrace.

With major donations from several generous benefactors during 2018, we are well on our way to reaching our goal of acquiring 50 significant works for the Curtin University Art Collection by 2020 for our 50fiftyinitiative.

The John Curtin Gallery has launched its inaugural donors’ circle – the JCG Founders’ Club – and all Gallery supporters are encouraged to become members. The Club will create funding for expanded Gallery activities including community engagement programs and enhanced access to the Collection.

Alan Dodge, one of Australia’s most experienced and respected authorities on the visual arts and a long-serving member of the John Curtin Gallery Advisory Board, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Curtin in August.
